How far should a western pad extend, and does this pad fit correctly?

A western pad should fully cover the saddle and may be slightly larger than the saddle itself. As a general guideline, it is often recommended that the pad extends about 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) beyond the saddle at both the front and the back. However, this is not a strict rule.

More important than the exact number of centimeters is that:

  • the saddle is completely supported by the pad

  • the pad does not end tightly underneath the saddle

  • the pad does not extend onto the loins or restrict the horse’s movement

In the photo, it can be seen that the pad:

  • extends sufficiently at the back

  • extends less than 5–7 cm at the front

  • does not reach or interfere with the loins

In this situation, adding more length at the back would actually increase the risk of rubbing. Although the pad does not strictly meet the 5–7 cm guideline at both ends, it is functionally correct.

Conclusion:
Choosing the right size western pad is about correct fit and freedom of movement, not just measurements. If you are unsure between two sizes, always ensure that the pad stays clear of the loins and fully supports the saddle.
